The Arkansas Senate voted Thursday (Jan. 31) to ban abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected.

SB134, dubbed the “Protection of Life with a Heartbeat” bill, passed 26-8, according to state Sen. Bart Hester, R-Cave Springs.

The legislation would require a woman to undergo a test to detect a fetal heartbeat before the abortion is performed. If one is detected, the abortion would not be allowed except in certain situations such as rape or incest.

The bill would also allow an abortion if the mother’s life was at risk.

The measure must now head to the House. If it is approve there, it would go to Gov. Mike Beebe for his signature.
