Police will increase their presence at a Fort Smith high school pep rally Friday after rumors spread around school of a possible shooting planned at the event.

Fort Smith police began investigating rumors of a planned shooting at Northside High School's homecoming rally. The rumors infiltrated Twitter and Facebook on Thursday, said Sgt. Daniel Grubbs.

Police said the rumors were traced back to a note found in the school’s cafeteria. Grubbs said the threat of a shooting was “a young man’s attempt to write a rap song.”

"I got a gun named kindness and one of these days I am going to kill you with kindness," the student's note read, according to the Fort Smith Police Department.

The student was identified, and "the school handled the situation administratively," according to a police news release.

The student's lyrics were morphed into a rumor of a possible shooting at Friday's pep ralley, police said.

Grubbs said he believes the rumors are overblown, but police will step-up patrol of the school Friday just to be safe.

"The Fort Smith Police Department would like to ensure the public that no imminent danger is present at our local schools, and that gross misperceptions occurred during this incident," according to the news release.
