Crews battled a major house fire in Fort Smith that began with the breaking of glass and the squealing of tires.

The Fort Smith Fire Department and local police responded to the fire at South 17th Street and G Street on Monday night at a vacant house. Flames are visible for blocks around the fire and appeared to reach up near the tops of nearby trees.

The Fort Smith Police Department directed traffic near the fire.

A neighbor heard glass break and tires squeal just before the fire. When he then looked out the window, the nearby house was on fire, said Brian Mumphrey.

Mumphrey said the house has been vacant for a while.
