The Arkansas Razorbacks accounted for 19 hits and 17 runs in a double header victory over New Orleans on Tuesday at Baum Stadium.
The Hogs won game one 14-0 in seven innings and won game two 3-0. New Orleans had just five total hits in the two games.
Freshman Colin Poche won the first game on the mound, giving up only one hit in five scoreless innings. Poche made his season debut after serving a three-game suspension following his arrest last month for suspicion of shoplifting. He has a court date on March 1.
Van Buren native and redshirt freshman Tyler Spoon led the Diamond Hogs at the plate, going 3-for-8 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Alma native Matt Vinson also had three hits and scored a run.
"We were on a mission today and you could tell in the dugout," said Spoon. "The feeling was just there. We knew we were going to come out and win today. We were able to string hits together and took advantage of our opportunities and we still even missed some opportunities. We did a great job of putting together a lot of hits in a row."
Arkansas scored 10 runs in the first three innings to put the game away.
Game two had an entirely different feel.
Four Arkansas pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout. Landon Simpson started on the mound for his first collegiate appearance and earned the victory, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing three hits. Colby Suggs, Michael Gunn and Prairie Grove's Jalen Beeks came in for relief of Simpson and preserved the shutout. Suggs tossed a hitless inning, while Gunn struck out six. Beeks earned the first save of his Razorback career with a perfect ninth inning.
Arkansas got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the second. With one out, Gunn doubled to the gap in left center and came around to score on a two-out single up the middle by Jake Wise.
The Razorbacks added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Anderson walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a ground out by Gunn. After Jordan Farris walked, each runner moved up a base on a wild pitch. Wise drove home Anderson with a RBI ground out to short to give Arkansas a 2-0 lead.
Arkansas plays host to Evansville for the first of a three-game series on Friday. First pitch is at 3:05 p.m.
