Women Taken to Hospital After Truck Drives Off Cliff

Two women were taken by medical helicopter to a River Valley hospital after their vehicle went off a 30-foot bluff north of Alma.

Two women were taken by medical helicopter to a River Valley hospital after their vehicle went off a 30-foot bluff north of Alma.

The women, ages 26 and 28, were traveling east on Freedom Valley Road when the pickup truck veered off the road, according to Crawford County Chief Deputy Jimmy Damante.

“Came around the corner and they lost control,” said Michael Brewer, an eyewitness.

The driver over-corrected and went off a bluff, Damante said. The truck landed on its side and the two women had to be extracted from the vehicle.

Brewer knows the women involved and saw the accident. “They were just driving and the truck just lost control and they went off the embankment,” he said.

An eyewitness says it took more than an hour to get the women out of the truck. “The cab crushed down,” said Jeremy Gregory, who grew up nearby. “We had to cut the frame off, cut the seats up to get the lady out.”

Crews blocked off the road while a team worked to pull the truck out. “Oh it's totaled. It went on its last journey. It's finished,” said Greg Cochran.

Damante did not know the extent of the women’s injuries, but said one of them was able to talk. The other woman was slipping in and out of consciousness, Damante said.

Brewer expects the women to survive. The truck, however, is beyond repair. “It’s totaled, but it can be replaced,” said Brewer.

Brewer says the women were on the way to visit a relative when the accident happened.
