A bill that would have required the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State University to play each other in football was defeated Wednesday in the Arkansas House Rules Committee.

The bill failed on a voice vote, with objections coming from lawmakers that the General Assembly should not be involved in that kind of issue.

Rep. Andy Mayberry, R-Hensley, submitted House Bill 2274 earlier this month, calling for the football teams to play each other once at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, “beginning with the earliest possible regular season.”

At least $250,000 from ticket sales would have gone to “a government, community, charitable or philanthropic group,” the bill states.
