A Fort Smith man was killed while attempting to cross Interstate 540 in Fort Smith on Saturday morning.

Joshua Winkler, 23, tried to cross the interstate south of the River Bridge when he was struck by a Honda Accord and then run over by a Peterbilt dump truck at approximately 12:55 a.m., according to a state police accident report. Winkler had made it across the northbound lane and then a concrete construction barrier before being struck, the report said.

A state police officer said Winkler and two friends had been “mudding” in a park near Midland Boulevard when their truck broke down. Winkler and one friend attempted to go for help by crossing interstate, but one friend decided not to and tried to talk Winkler into returning, the state police said.

The state police said blood samples were taken from Winkler and the drivers of the vehicles that struck him.
