The wintry weather caused the cancellation of the re-enactment of the Battle of Pea Ridge, according to Steve Bailey, event organizer.
The demonstration was scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. on the Big Sugar Creek, located about 3.5 miles north of downtown Pea Ridge.
The three-day event started on Friday but was cut short, according to organizers, because some re-enactors traveled from the Northern states where there was snow accumulation.
“I told the Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa men, ‘you guys have to go home before it gets bad,'” Bailey said.
After the last battle Saturday, the tent started to freeze up, said Bailey.
“We were going to get about 150 people stuck and the vehicles in our parking lot were getting slick,” Bailey said.
The event organizers decided Saturday evening to cancel Sunday’s activities. However, they want to thank the hundreds of re-enactors, volunteers and spectators who made it possible.
“The event wouldn’t have been possible without volunteers,” Bailey said.
About 200 people watched the re-enactments on Friday and Saturday.
The activity honors the 26,000 soldiers who fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge during the Civil War in 1862.
