Students at Carnall Elementary were treated to a special “story time” Wednesday, when their principal ventured to the roof.

Principal Michela Wiley promised her students she would read a book from the roof if they raised $315 in change during the school's book fair. The classes raised more than $400.

The ‘change war’ not only sparked a competition but got the kids excited about books.

“They wanted books for their classrooms and during the book fair, we had record sales of items,” said Paula Dunn, media specialist.

The classrooms competed to earn books for their classes. Scholastic Books will also match the amount raised to donate books to schools in need, as well as more than $300 of books to Carnall Elementary.

Fort Smith firefighters used a bucket to help the principal reach a height even higher than the roof. She read the story using a megaphone from the safety of the bucket.
