A three-car rollover accident with injuries completely shut down the Garrison Avenue bridge for about an hour Wednesday morning (April 17).

Traffic coming into Arkansas from Oklahoma was delayed for about half an hour, according to Fort Smith Police Sgt. Daniel Grubbs.

The accident occurred at 3rd Street and Garrison. For a short time, police on scene turned around one lane of traffic back to Oklahoma.

Fort Smith police captain Levi Risley says at this time, it looks like there were two accidents.

One involved three vehicles at the foot of the bridge and the second involved two cars on the bridge.

Several Fort Smith fire units and police officers responded to the accident since in involved blocking a high volume of traffic coming into the city.

“Traffic congestion, when we shut down one of the major arteries into Fort Smith causes a major traffic control issue, because traffic backs up over into Oklahoma and we had to request Oklahoma to help control the traffic inbound and outbound,” Risley said.

Sergeant Daniel grubs says Jeff Ledbetter of Roland rear-ended a car in the center turn lane coming off the bridge resulting in the first accident. He along with the driver of one of the cars he struck was taken to the hospital. Ledbetter was ticketed for careless driving, according to police.
