State Sen. Bart Hester replied Friday (April 19) to a published comment directed at him from a fellow Republican, House Speaker Davy Carter of Cabot.

In a story Friday on the Arkansas News website, Carter is quoted saying Hester was “off base” in expressing disappointment that more tax cuts aren’t going to kick in during the upcoming fiscal year.

Carter said, “When you come up and serve in the General Assembly, you have to realize that you don’t get 100 percent of what you want every time.”

Hester, a first-term senator living in Cave Springs near Bentonville, said in an e-mail to 5NEWS he is “not surprised that Rep. Carter would view my comments as off base.”

“There are many political decisions we do not agree on, and this one being taxes,” Hester said. “I respect his position. I will personally continue to push for conservative legislation.”

Carter has been a proponent of the “private option” plan allowing the use of federal money to buy private insurance for poor Arkansans. Hester voted against the proposal in the Senate.
