The next great Greenwood quarterback has committed to a college, and he happens to be a cousin of Tyler Wilson. His name is Jabe Burgess, but he's not going to Arkansas. He's going to Tulsa.

Burgess committed to the Golden Hurricane late Thursday night. He threw for more than 3,100 yards and 34 touchdowns in a State Championship season as a junior in 2012. Burgess chose Tulsa over an offer from Illinois. He says the familiarity of the playbook was the reason for the commit.

“They like my accuracy and they like how similar our offenses are,” said Burgess. “I think that is really something that kind of influenced my decision also because the offenses are so similar in a lot of ways.”

Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship spent four years at Spiro High School in the late 1980s, so he’s familiar with the talent from the River Valley area. Sallisaw outgoing senior quarterback Ben Oberste will be a Golden Hurricane in the fall. He and Burgess should eventually compete for the starting job.

“I think I can have a good chance of competing early on and I'll be able to be successful in that type of offense because I am so used to it in high school.”

Greenwood will be a favorite next year during Burgess’s senior season, where the Bulldogs will go for an unprecedented fourth straight State Championship.
