He might have been a long shot to start the day but Oxbow ran away with the Preakness Stakes.

Going off as 15-1 odds, Oxford took the lead out of the gate and never looked back and carried jockey Gary Stevens to the finish line.

“We were kind of flying under the radar after the Derby, didn’t get a lot of respect, even with the great performance,” Stevens said to NBC. He added: “When I hit the half-mile pole, I told myself, ‘Are you kidding me? Is this happening?’ The race was over at the half-mile point.”

Oxbow is a D. Wayne Lukas trained horse who finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby earlier this spring.

“I get paid to spoil dreams,”  Lukas told NBC’s broadcast shortly after Oxbow covered the 1 3/16-mile track in 1:57:54, ahead of Itsmyluckyday and Mylute.

Orb, who won the Kentucky Derby, drew the rail and was never in contention as the horse finished fourth.
