Authorities are still searching for a convicted rapist who escaped from a minimum-security prison in LeFlore County, Okla. on Monday (July 1).

Curtis Edwin Gibson, 51, has 11 Oklahoma convictions on his record, including rape and three instances of assaulting a police officer.

Gibson went missing from the Jim E. Hamilton Correctional Center in Hodgen, Okla., around 4 p.m., according to Monika Benton, the assistant to the warden of the facility.

"All the offenders were accounted for except for Curtis Gibson who was not present in his cell," Benton said. "So therefore, we did a recount and then we search all of the adjacent buildings."

Prison officials believe Gibson 'walked away' from the facility on foot, according to Benton.

Authorities tracked Gibson to the north of the facility which leads to hilly terrain. However, they said they have since lost his track.

A warrant is now out for Gibson's arrest. If caught, he could face an additional two to seven years behind bars, plus the rest of the term he was serving when he escaped, authorities said.

Gibson is considered armed and dangerous, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Gibson is Native American, 5’9”, 270 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes.

The escaped inmate has a combined 44 years of prison sentencing. His record in the 1990s shows rape, driving under the influence and bail jumping, while his convictions in the last decade include assault on a police officer, domestic abuse, DUI and failure to register as a sex offender, according to Oklahoma Department of Corrections records.

Gibson also goes by the name “Kirk,” according to the department of corrections.

If you see Gibson, call 911, your local police department or the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Fugitive Warrants Division at (405) 425-2570.
