Police have identified the Winslow man who was hospitalized over the weekend after police say he jumped from his burning truck in Fayetteville.

Scott Dale Sherwin, 40, suffered burns and was hospitalized Saturday at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, before being medically flown to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, according to Fayetteville police. The extent of Sherwin’s injuries is unknown, according to police and firefighters. Police released Sherwin’s name Monday.

Police said the man got into the burning truck at approximately 9 p.m. at a motel on North College Avenue and drove north. Witnesses said the truck then veered into the center turn lane and the man leaped the vehicle as it became engulfed in flames.

The truck continued, crossing two southbound lanes before crashing into the curb in front of the Lewis automotive dealership near the intersection of North College and East Longview Street. The truck was badly damaged by the fire, which also scorched an electric box on the ground.

Police officials said the man was interviewed on the scene after the accident but the conversation was “unproductive.” Police said they hope to speak to the man again after he recovers from his burns.

Emergency responders blocked off North College for a time to divert traffic through adjoining parking lots. Both northbound lanes and the inside southbound lane were reopened while police continued to investigate the accident.

The crash is still under investigation, according to Fayetteville police. They said it will be decided after the investigation concludes whether or not to file any charges.
