Around 3,000 backpacks filled with school supplies will be given to River Valley children in need Saturday morning (Aug. 3).

Harvest Time Church will have volunteers handing out the backpacks at the Walmart stores located on Kelley Highway and  on Zero Street in Fort Smith.

“People are hurting and it’s not needy like we think. Middle-aged families, everyone, if you can save 10 bucks, if you have four kids in a school, these backpacks are like a $15 value, “ said April Phillips, the Harvest Time community impact director.

“That’s $60 for a family and that’s gas and groceries.”

Children that are K-6 graders can pick one up from 10 a.m. to noon.

The event coincides with Arkansas' sales tax holiday.
