Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe endorsed former congressman Mike Ross in the 2014 gubernatorial race Saturday (Aug. 17)

Beebe, who is prohibited by term limits from running, said he was proud to support his friend to replace him.

“Arkansas has made too great of strides in education and economic development to allow our state to turn back that progress now,” Beebe said. “Mike Ross will unite this state with a bipartisan focus on education, job creation and tax relief, and he will serve as the hardworking, compassionate leader we need to continue moving Arkansas forward.”

Ross, who represented the 4th Congressional District for 12 years, is the only Democratic candidate after Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and former Lt. Gov. Bill Halter dropped out of the race. Rogers lawyer Asa Hutchinson, Central Arkansas businessman Curtis Coleman and state Rep. Debra Hobbs are seeking the Republican nomination.

“Governor Beebe has served this state well and the reason he’s the most popular governor in America is because he always puts good public policy over partisan politics and he always puts Arkansas first,” Ross said in a released statement. “I will build on Governor Beebe’s foundation on education, job creation and tax relief and I will unite this state to keep moving Arkansas forward.”
