A mangled wreck in Fort Smith sent a man to the hospital Monday night.

Emergency crews responded at about 9 p.m. to a crash site at North O Street and Churchill.

Fort Smith Police said a driver hit a van from behind because he suddenly stopped.  The van was apparently waiting on a man pushing a go-kart.  The collision caused the van to run over a go-kart, according to police.  The man pushing the go-kart was not injured, however.

Fort Smith Police said the driver said he was traveling about 50 m.p.h. at the time of the crash.

The driver of the van was transported to a local hospital.  Fort Smith Police said he only had minor injuries in the crash.

“I was thinking, oh my gosh; somebody’s got killed,” said eyewitness Rocky Shubert. “And I got out to start checking with people to see if there was anybody hurt or anything, and the gentleman that was in the van, he climbed out.”

The driver of the car who hit the van driver was cited, according to Fort Smith Police, for reckless driving and not having proof of insurance.  Authorities said the driver was also cited because he had moved to Arkansas from another state and failed to get a new state drivers license.
