Two men were arrested on capital murder charges in Norfolk, Virginia, Friday (Aug. 23) in connection with a death in Springdale earlier this month.

John Guerra, 55, and James “Jim” Smith, 48, are also facing charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated residential burglary.

Guerra and Smith are accused of beating and robbing 62-year-old Edward Charles Abel at his home on East Brown Road in Springdale on Aug. 16.

Police responded to the home around 11:15 p.m. Abel was taken to Northwest Medical Center where he later died.

Arrangements for extradition of Guerra and Smith were underway Monday, according to Lt. Derek Hudson with Springdale Police. Two detectives traveled to Norfolk over the weekend to continue the investigation.
