Water temporarily covered a Fayetteville street Wednesday, prompting workers to block off the roadway throughout the day.

A city water main broke on Center Street at the Fayetteville Square at about 11 a.m., said David Jurgens, director of city utilities. Officials quickly responded and blocked off the street, clearing the way for construction workers to begin repairs, Jurgens said.

Workers dug up a section of the street to reach the affected water main, and replaced part of the piping by Wednesday night. The street returned to one lane by early evening. Both lanes were opened for traffic later in the night.

The whole process to repair a water main break typically takes four to six hours, city officials said.

The city will re-examine the area Thursday to make sure the repair process worked. Business owners nearby were affected by the water main break. Many were forced to close down for the day because their water was turned off.

Vetro Ristaurante was hit the hardest.

"I’m a little bit concerned, because this weekend is football weekend and we have a lot of people coming into town", said Angelo Amabile, owner of Vetro restaurant in downtown Fayetteville.

Amabile told 5NEWS that an inch of water flooded his basement. So now, the clean-up has begun and they are looking toward what he hopes is a busy weekend.

"Next is to accommodate my clients and make them feel as comfortable as possible, and with the great food, we just make everything go away," Amabile said.
