A transformer failure Wednesday night (Aug. 28) left thousands without power in the River Valley. While some Sequoyah County residents were waiting in the dark, the sheriff believes others were looting.

Deputies were called to assist the Vian Police Department after two stores and a pharmacy were broken into during the power outage, Sheriff Ron Lockhart said Thursday.

He says his deputies patrolled the streets as OG&E workers restored the power.

No arrests have been made and little details were available, Vian Police Chief Allan Ellis said.

The power outage was due to a transformer failure at a substation and affected 3,000 customers. Power was restored around midnight.
