Crawford County Sheriff deputies arrested a Level 4 sex offender after he slipped out of a house where he supposed to be supervised 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Paul McGill,28, was booked in the Crawford County Jail on Friday evening and faces a charge of terroristic threatening. He is being held until a bond hearing Sept. 11, officials said.
McGill moved into a house on the 1300 block of Oak Grove Road between Van Buren and Kibler in early August and was to be monitored by the Arkansas Support Network.
Jimmy Damante, the chief deputy sheriff of Crawford County, said McGill and his caretaker got into some sort of disturbance or fight Friday. Damante said McGill then left the house and traveled on foot to the nearby home of an off-duty police officer.
"He was literally rocking back and forth in a rage saying he needed to kill somebody," the off-duty officer's wife said. "(McGill) said that he was running from the state worker because (the state worker) wouldn't let (McGill) get a juice from the refrigerator."
The off-duty officer and his wife said McGill had a weapon in his hand that looked like a large wrench and was threatening to return to the home he lived in and kill his supervisor. The police officer called the Crawford County Sheriff's Office and deputies arrived to place McGill under arrest.
"It was a very scary situation," said the officer's wife. "I'm very upset over it. I mean, my little girl was in there screaming and crying."
Law officials said Level 4 sex offenders are considered sexually violent and likely to re-offend.The officer and his wife believe more needs to be done to ensure the safety of the community.
"If they have to be monitored by the state, they need to be in some sort of facility," she said. "Or they need to have some sort of ankle bracelets on. Not where they can break out of their home and come terrorize neighbors, innocent people, with a weapon."
Damante said officers were unsure how McGill was able to escape detection when he left the house or how long he had been unaccounted for before turning up at the off-duty police officer's home.
McGill pleaded guilty to sexual indecency with a child and terroristic threatening in Craighead County in 2012, according to court documents.
