A River Valley museum helped people beat the heat and cool off with an ice-cold treat Sunday (Sept. 1).
The Fort Smith Museum of History held its annual ice cream social Sunday afternoon. For $5 per person, visitors got all the ice cream and toppings they could eat.
Executive Director Leisa Gramlich said with the temperatures hitting triple digits in the River Valley, the museum is a great place to visit on a hot day. She said the 103-year-old museum traces the history of Fort Smith from its beginnings as a military fort to the development of the city around it.
Gramlich said community events like the annual Ice Cream Social help support the nonprofit museum operations.
The museum, located at 320 Rogers Avenue, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children age 6-12 and admission is free for children under 6 years old.
Beginning Saturday, September 14, the museum with feature a photographic look at the development of Garrison Avenue, the main street through downtown Fort Smith.
The museum will also host history lessons for children. The volunteer-led session will cover the early days of Fort Smith in a kid-friendly environment. This program will be held Sept. 14 and Sept. 28.
