The first step in making an intersection where a local teacher was killed into a four-way stop was approved Tuesday (Sept. 17) at the Fort Smith City Directors meeting.

By a vote of four to three, directors approved the first reading of an ordinance making Chad College Blvd. and Massard Rd. a four-way stop. Crystal Buswell, an Alma High School teacher, was killed in a collision with a dump truck at the intersection Aug. 29.

The Street and Traffic Control Department is working to create lower speed limits and signs for the area. Last week the department said traffic at that intersection was not heavy enough to warrant a four-way stop.

The ordinance must be read and approved two more times before it takes affect.
