One book inside a Springdale library is creating some controversy. Not because of the topic, but because of what’s inside it.

The book is called, “It’s Perfectly Normal” and it’s designed for kids, ages 10 and up.

“It’s a very good option for someone who’s wanting to discuss sexuality with their child or for a teen wanting information about sexual development and growth, said Springdale Library Director Marsha Ransom.

Some call the book explicit. One person even sent in a written complaint to the Springdale Library Board, stating a book where homosexuality, masturbation and birth control are discussed, with illustrations should not be in a Public Library.

The library feels it’s a safe read, for educational purposes only, and tells 5NEWS they are doing nothing wrong.

Inside the library, you’ll find the book in the young adult and adult section. As for recent complaints, Ransom said it is the first complaint they have received for “It’s Perfectly Normal”.

“We work hard at selecting materials that we put in our collection and I can’t say we are one-hundred percent all the time, but we do go through a process of selecting materials and we have a policy that we follow “, Ransom told 5NEWS.

The library board held a hearing Tuesday night (Sept. 24) on the issue and voted unanimously to reject the request to remove the book. The decision comes during the American Library Association’s banned book week.
