Federal officials have called for a third party to look over the quality of work being done by contractors, to replace the main runway at the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport.

The project is almost a month behind so the third party will review that and the engineering part of the project, among any safety concerns.

Officials say The Federal Aviation Administration will pay for the review.

Airport officials at XNA aren't 100 % satisfied with the quality of work, however contractors say they are doing what they are told to do.

The two sides did meet, but did not reach an agreement.

The Harper Company of Kentucky is the contractor and work was started last year.

Meanwhile, Kimley Horn and Associates is doing the engineering part.

The entire runway and base, plus the drainage and electrical will be replaced.

"The smoothness issue is one of the items that we are looking at. We just want to make sure we are getting the product that we are paying for. It is a 26-million dollar contract, so it’s a pretty good sized project and we just want to make sure we have the quality at the end of the day that is required through the specifications", said Kelly Johnson with XNA.

A different runway is currently being used. Passengers are not affected. Lawyers for the airport and the contractors are expected to meet for the first time, Friday (Sept. 27).
