Nineteen University of Arkansas employees received furlough notices this week because of the partial federal government shutdown, the university released in a statement Tuesday.

Eight faculty and 11 staff members received their notices Monday night. All receive pay from the National Science Foundation or NASA grants, and the university is unable to draw money from those sources, according to the UA’s statement.

Ten of the employees are on full furlough because at least 90 percent of their paychecks come from federal funds. The other nine are on partial furlough, since they only receive a portion of their salaries from federal funding.

“We have 80 students whose work is funded through federal research grants,” said Jim Rankin, vice provost for research and economic development. “Their colleges and departments have been able to find alternate funding for them, and no students have been furloughed.”

Tuesday’s announcement comes a day after the UA warned as many as 100 employees could be furloughed if Washington, D.C., politicians do not reach a deal on the government shutdown sometime this week.
