More than 150 volunteers came together to serve nearly 500 meals at the Salvation Army in Fort Smith Thursday (Nov. 28).

Captain Russell Clay said it's a busy time of year for the Salvation Army, and they wouldn't be able to prepare and serve the feast without help from the community.

"We're doing bell ringing, we're doing Angel Tree," he said. "We couldn't do this without volunteers."

Jack Vosburg from Fort Smith has been volunteering for the Salvation Army since he moved to the area in 1995. His assignment Thursday was to deliver meals to people who are housebound and unable to make it to the Salvation Army on Thanksgiving.

"We may be the only people that they have come to their homes," said Vosburg. "Maybe the only people that they talk to today."

The Salvation Army also held a coat drive and guests were encouraged to get fitted for a coat after eating they ate.

"Come down get a hot meal, get a coat, and you can be warm on the inside and the outside," said Clay.

The Salvation Army in Bentonville and Fayetteville also provided free Thanksgiving meals to the community. Northwest Arkansas restaurants Sassy's Red House, Penguin Ed's and AQ Chicken helped cook 30 donated turkeys for the event.
