Fort Smith police seized 70 pounds of marijuana in a local man’s car during a traffic stop Monday, following an extensive investigation, they say.

Police arrested Ubaldo Salas-Ortiz, 29, on suspicion of possession of marijuana with purpose to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Fort Smith Police Department. He was released Tuesday from the Sebastian County Detention Center on $13,500 bond, according to a deputy at the detention center.

Following an ongoing investigation into alleged marijuana distribution by Salas-Ortiz, investigators received a tip he was in possession of a large amount of marijuana.

Police set up surveillance at his home on Northview Drive and said they later conducted a traffic stop on his 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck. Officers searching the vehicle with a drug dog found about 70 pounds of marijuana, police said. They then searched the suspect’s home and found $23,000 in cash, according to the Fort Smith Police Department.
