Families Spend Time Together After School Closings

In anticipation of the winter weather headed to the area, many schools throughout Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley canceled classes Thursday (Dec. 5).

In anticipation of the winter weather headed to the area, many schools throughout Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley canceled classes Thursday (Dec. 5).

Fort Smith mom Genevieve Fisher said she was relieved to find out classes were canceled for her kids. She had already planned to call her children out of school if administrators didn't choose to cancel class.

"I don't like the road conditions, I don't like them being on buses. Not knowing if they're going to be safe coming home," she said.

Fisher said she'll have a full house today with her two children, two nieces and a nephew all home from school. After they learned school was closed, the group made a last-minute trip to Walmart to stock up on supplies they might need to ride out the storm.

"We got a lot of milk, cereal, lot of stuff that you can just open up real fast in case the electric goes out, that kind of stuff," said Fisher who added she'll also be making homemade chicken noodle soup to keep her family warm.

The group also picked up some board games to keep the kids entertained during the day.
