Cars circled the Northwest Arkansas Mall's parking lot in pursuit of a spot, because the lot was filled with cars. Crowds of shoppers surrounded the doors of the mall as they waited to take advantage of post-holiday sales on the first day of the year.

Rue 21, Etc. and American Eagle had everything on sale at half off. The store that received most of the traffic was Dillard's. The store marked an extra 50 percent off all sale items.

Valencia Boykin went to the Dillard's sale with her son, Richard. She said she saw all the cars in the parking lot and remembered the big Jan. 1 sales.

"It's about the clothes," she said. "When you come out on Black Friday, you've got the toys, electronics and it's real crazy, because they're buying for Christmas, but today you're getting a good sale."

Chelsea Hodge has been to a New Year's day sale before. She said she was looking for a Fossil wallet and has been waiting for one to go on sale.

"A lot of the designer nice brands that are already marked down a little bit will go down even further," she said. "It's stuff that you can normally never find on sale."

Shopper said it was really crowded and there were a lot of people on the hunt for a deal. One woman went to both the Dillard's in Rogers and Fayetteville and said she was ready for the day.

"I just got back from a week in New York City, so this is just going to be like a walk in the park," Deana Gabbart said.
