The autopsy for a young Fayetteville woman found dead in her apartment in September was released this week, showing her cause of death as "undetermined".

Police said the unsolved case remains an active investigation. They said, at the time of her death, they would investigate the case as a homicide until proven otherwise.

“We do that in every death investigation,” said Sgt. Craig Stout, at the time.

Police found Nikisha Keith dead at the Chestnut Apartments in Fayetteville on Sept. 7, Stout said.

Investigators couldn’t find any obvious signs of trauma such as a gunshot or stab wound. They didn’t find a suicide note or medications either.

Stout said someone found Keith at Building 2060, Apartment 14, and called police.

Neighbors told 5NEWS this week they were saddened to hear the news, and the inconclusive autopsy makes them think about their own safety.

"I am shocked," said Blake Mitchell, who lives at the Chestnut Apartments. "But this neighborhood is not 100 percent, the safest one in Fayetteville."

Neighbors said even though foul play may not have played a part in Keith's death, stepping up security in the area might make them feel better following a death at the complex.

"It is very dark around here, and I do think more lights would make me feel safer," Mitchell said.

Fayetteville police are asking anyone with information on the case to give them a call.
