Monday was a day off for many, but area students were in school making up for snow days.
Classes were in session at all Fayetteville Public Schools on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Monday was the first of two snow days being made up this week. Saturday is the second makeup day.
"We only had about four Saturdays in the whole four to five month span that were available," said Alan Wilbourn with the Fayetteville School District. "This particular one was just duck-tailed on this week."
So what was supposed to be a four-day school week, is now a six-day school week. Wilbourn said people have responded well to the makeup schedule.
"The parent's responses, particularly on social media, have been overwhelmingly positive," he said.
Some parents are not thrilled about their children going to school on Saturdays. Bernice Mathias said a six-day school week is too long.
"I think it's too hard on the kids, probably the teachers too." she said. "They are worn out by the time they are through with five days."
Randy Edwards said he understands classes need to be made up.
"For our family we just roll with the punches," he said. "I don't know that my daughter is terribly excited about getting up early on Saturday morning."
Wilbourn said this is the second time the school district has had a six-day school week. The first time was in 2011.
"It's not the most popular thing, but it's very important to recapture those instructional days early in the semester," he said.
After this week, students will have one makeup day in March and another in April. The other four snow days will be made up at the end of the school year in June.
