An Elm Springs man is in jail after his pregnant girlfriend told police he chased her through the streets of Springdale in his vehicle after smashing her windshield with a baseball bat.

Sheldon Allen, 47, was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of aggravated assault. He remained Monday in the Washington County Detention Center without bond, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The alleged victim told Springdale police she and Allen, her boyfriend, broke up Sunday because of his drinking problem. The man retrieved his dog from the woman, then smashed her windshield with a baseball bat while she sat in the front seat, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The woman said she fled the scene in her vehicle, but Allen followed her in his car. He eventually rammed the back of her car during the chase near Shipley Street and Porter Avenue, the report states. The alleged victim then ran a red light to try to get away from her pursuer, seeking refuge at Price Cutter in Springdale, where she called police, according to the preliminary report.

Police contacted Allen at his Elm Springs home and placed him under arrest, the report states. The woman was not injured in the incident.
