The city of Fayetteville is wrapping up construction of the Frisco Trail extension project. The half-mile trail will run through the Martin Luther King Jr. tunnel, along South School Avenue to Walker Park.
The half-mile section is expected to be complete by late March, according to Matt Mihalevich, trails coordinator for the city of Fayetteville.
Crews are installing three bridges on the new extension project. The bridges are about 80 feet long and 12 feet wide. Two bridges will go across the Tanglewood Branch Creek and the other will go across the Spout Spring Branch Creek.
It's the southern piece of the 36-mile Razorback Regional Greenway Trail that will go from Fayetteville to Bella Vista.
"This is a pretty critical piece of the Greenway," Mihalevich said.
"It's the southern part but for the 36 miles. It's counted in there along with some pieces in Johnson and working in Rogers and all through the corridor but looking at June 20-14 to have it all finished," Mihalevich said.
They started work on the half-mile trail in August 2013 starting with the Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd tunnel. It will go from MLK Jr. Blvd. all the way to Walker Park.
Malcolm Levois runs three miles every morning. He said he's looking forward to its completion.
"That's one of the best things Fayetteville has got going," Levois said. "A lot of people use the trail. I really love it."
The project cost $1.4 million. The Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission will pay $1.2 million and the city of Fayetteville will pay $200,000.
