Tyler Steel, a suspended Sebastian County Detention Deputy, appeared in court today for  his arraignment, according to the Fort Smith Prosecuting Attorney’s office.

He pleaded not guilty to a DWI charge, and his next court date was scheduled for April 2 at 1:30 pm.

Investigator Philip Pevehouse with the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Detention Deputy Tyler Steel was arrested and booked on suspicion of DWI. As a result, Steel has been suspended from his duties while his arrest is under investigation.

The accident happened at the intersection of I-540 and Zero around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning (Feb. 20), according to the police report. An officer with Fort Smith Police responded to the accident, and arrested Steel on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and following too close to another car.

The police report stated that Steel was headed east bound on Zero, and moved into the turn lane to get on I-540 when he rear-ended an SUV. Authorities said no one was hurt in the accident but both Steel’s car and the SUV were damaged.

When police arrived, Steel was given a field sobriety test which he failed, according to Fort Smith Police.
