Lowell crews on Thursday night battled a transformer fire that spread to a field near Edgehill Avenue.

Authorities received a call around 8 p.m. about a street pole on fire. The situation later turned into a grass fire call, police said.

An eyewitness said he heard an explosion, and the lights on Edgehill went out. He said he saw the transformer on fire, along with a cow field near his home.

Crews had the fire under control and left the area around 9 p.m.

A Cox Cable truck responded to the scene to repair the damage.
