An escaped inmate from Haskell County is now back in custody.

Edward Branch, Jr. escaped from the Haskell County Detention Center on April 22, 2014 around 1 a.m..

He was recaptured around mile marker 310 on I-40 near Salisaw at approximately 5 a.m. Monday morning (April 28), according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart.

Authorities said Branch busted through a drain on the roof of the jail. From there, he repelled to the ground using the rope. The depth is about a 25-foot drop, according to authorities.

The jailers who were watching Branch have not been suspended or fired, but re-training plans are in the works for the employees working the night Branch broke free.

Branch was in the jail after being convicted of aggravated assault, robbery and burglary this month.

He had been there since June of 2013 and was waiting on a transfer to a state prison.
