University of Arkansas police say a rumor about a shooting threat on campus has been deemed not credible.

Campus police sent out an emergency alert to students and staff at 1:46 p.m. on Wednesday notifying them of the threat and asking recipients to stay on alert.

A local person reported to police at 11:45 a.m. that the night before, he overheard a conversation at a Fayetteville bar in which a man said “there was going to be a shooting on campus” the following day, according to the emergency alert.

The University of Arkansas Police Department immediately began investigating and later determined the threat was not credible, said Capt. Gary Crain with UAPD.

Crain said he could not release what led police to believe the threat was not credible.

Police added extra patrols Wednesday as a precautionary measure. The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone on campus to contact them with any other tips or concerns.

The UA campus was not locked down, according to the alert.
