Greenwood native Doc Sadler is back among the head coaching ranks in college basketball.

“My family and I are very excited to be joining the Southern Miss family,” Sadler said in a press release. “I look forward to being a part of the unbelievable tradition of the Golden Eagle basketball program and building on the great foundation already in place.  I can’t wait to meet both our players and fans. We’re going to do some special things together.”

Sadler was previously at Iowa State, where he served as an assistant this past season.

“We’ve hired one of the great coaches in America and a perfect match for Southern Miss in Doc Sadler,”Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis said. “He is universally respected by his peers and regarded as one of the great coaching minds and recruiters in the country. Importantly, he will be a magnificent fit in our community. Our students, faculty, alumni and fans will love his engaging and genuine personality.”

Sadler’s coaching career started at Arkansas as he was an assistant from 1982-85. Sadler had two stops at UAFS as an assistant before being named head coach for the 1998 season, a position he held through the 2003 campaign.
