A Fayetteville woman’s homeless former boyfriend entered her home without her permission and then assaulted her, according to court documents.

The man was identified as Joseph Carter, court documents state. The incident took place on Tuesday (May 13) at 12:15 a.m.

The victim said Carter showed up at her residence uninvited and walked past her inside when she opened the door. She believed he was drunk, according to court documents.

She told him to leave several times, and he refused. When she threatened to call police, he slapped her and shoved her onto a coffee table, court documents state.

Carter shoved her once more as she stood up and tried to scream. Immediately after she started screaming, Carter pounced on her and placed his hands over her mouth and nose so that she couldn’t breathe. The victim estimated she was unable to breathe for 30 seconds, according to court documents.

The victim was eventually able to kick Carter off, and she again demanded that he leave. That was when Carter turned to the victim’s 2-year-old daughter and attempted to get a hug before he left. The victim said her daughter witnessed the entire incident, court documents state.

The victim said her daughter screamed in fear when Carter came near the infant, and Carter turned and left the residence.

When authorities arrived at the residence, located at the 2000 block of West Sycamore Street, they found the victim with redness and swelling on her left cheek and a scratch on her left arm, according to court documents.

Carter was later arrested in Tontitown on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. After being stopped, he was booked into the Washington County Detention Center, court documents state.

He faces charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault, domestic battery – 3rd degree and endangering the welfare of a minor – 3rd degree.
