Reano, Mansfield Eye Another Title

Lady Tigers looking to cap career with second title in four years

No matter what sport you might be talking about, the Mansfield Lady Tigers are no strangers to big games.

As one of the most decorated senior classes in school history is set to graduate, they're eyeing one last run at a 3A softball championship.

"They have a good pedigree," Mansfield coach Kyle Lem said. "They've won volleyball state championships. They were on the 2012 state softball championship team so the leadership is there. We may not be big in numbers but as far as team wise we are pretty strong."

Erin Reano is one of three seniors who have been four year starters for Mansfield and it's her leadership that came through when it was needed most. Reano's two run double in the late innings against Lavaca on Monday gave the Lady Tigers a berth in the 3A-1 regional championship game and it helped break a slump.

"I made sure she didn’t lose confidence," Lem said. "Just telling her to keep her head up and short stroke in the dugout and then she sits on a changeup and delivers it and then comes through again for us late in the game with a big double."

Much of Reano's success could be credited to the competition she faces each time out. Of the top four teams in the 3A-4, all four are headed to the state tournament later this week.

"It definitely shows that we have the toughest conference, one of the toughest conferences around here and that we had to compete all year," Reano said. "It wasn’t just a one game lucky thing."
