Title Hopes Fall Short For Mena

Lady Bearcats bid for first title in school history turned away by Brookland

Mena rolled through the state tournament as the No. 1 seed from the 4A-North but a fellow one seed ended their run at a state title in the finals at Bogle Park.

Brookland plated a pair of runs in the third and never looked back as they posted a 5-2 win in a battle of Lady Bearcats.

"We just ran into a really good pitcher and she controlled the game," Mena coach Ray Hunter said. "I thought our girls competed well. We just couldn't find the one break we needed."

Mena rallied to cut the deficit in half, 2-1 in the 6th, but Brookland got a two run double from Kyla Kelley to stretch the lead.

"I'm really proud of my girls," Mena junior Bailey Bunch said. "A lot of us are really young and we've been working for this our whole lives. This one game is not going to stop us. We'll be back here next year ready to fight back and I'm just really proud of us."
