The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) will begin work on Rogers Ave. in Fort Smith from Garrison Avenue to the 1-540 interchange Tuesday night (May 27).

Drivers can expect lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Kerri Fitzgerald has lived in Fort Smith her entire life. She said it's something that will create some driving headaches but said it's something the city needs.

"With summer coming up, teenagers being on the road more, maybe not the best time but you know, whatever needs to be done, the better for the city," Fitzgerald said.

The highway department has contracted the work to the Fort Smith company Forsgren Inc. It will cost $1.2 million.

Bob Lewonger has lived in Fort Smith for 9 years.

"If it ends up improving traffic and it ends up helping your vehicle, I think it's a great idea as long as they do it during the least amount of traffic is going on," Lewonger said.

The project includes milling of the existing lanes, an asphalt overlay, and striping, according to AHTD.

The work is schedule to be complete in July 2014.
