A 28-year-old man identified as Andy Wilson, of Sallisaw, was killed Monday night (June 2) after being involved in a single-car accident, according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart.

The accident happened around 11:15 p.m. Monday, on Highway 59, just south of the Sallisaw airport, Lockhart said. A sheriff’s deputy was driving in the southbound lane, when he noticed another driver swerving across the center line.

Lockhart said that’s when the deputy turned on his emergency lights, attempting to pull the car over. Instead, the car went off the road, and landed in a ditch, according to authorities.

The deputy on scene went to check on the driver, when he realized the driver wasn’t responding, Lockhart said. The deputy called for back-up, and EMS. Once on scene, the driver was taken by ambulance to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Lockhart.

The driver’s body is being sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, according to authorities. At this time, his name is not being released.

It appears the driver suffered from a medical condition prior to the accident, but that is still under investigation, Lockhart said.
