Southwestern Electric Power Company is warning customers about a new fraud that has been reported to them, according to a news release Thursday (June 5).

SWEPCO said callers are claiming to be from the “SWEPCO Disconnect Department,” and the callers claim that the person or business they have contacted owes money for past SWEPCO bills, and their service could be disconnected if not paid immediately.

The callers will then suggest that the customer they have contacted purchase a debit or cash card to pay the bill, according to the release.

SWEPCO reminded customers of the following in the release:

  • SWEPCO does not call customers to demand immediate payment.
  • SWEPCO will NOT ask customers to purchase a debit/cash card to pay a bill.
  • SWEPCO does notify customers with delinquent accounts via customer bills.

“SWEPCO does not call customers threatening disconnection and demanding immediately payment,” said Scott McCloud, principal communications consultant.

He continued, “If customers have doubts about who they are speaking to, they should hang up and call SWEPCO directly.”

SWEPCO can be contacted at 1-888-216-3523.
