Fort Smith Library to Push for Budget Increase

The Fort Smith Board of Directors will meet to approve an election petition, which will ask voters in August to approve a 2-mill increase for the library's budget.

The library's annual budget comes in at $2.6 million. With the increase, that budget would double.

"The purpose of this funding intiative is really to be able to take our library to the next level", said library Director Jennifer Goodson, "What that means is increasing our ability to be able to impact our community."

If the petition is approved, it would be the first time in 57 years the library's budget would get the millage increase.

"Without any additional funding, we'll basically have to stay the same or maybe even take a step backwards. This is really essential to us to be able to add value to our community", said Goodson.

Today's (June 10) meeting is set to start at noon at the Fort Smith Public Library.

Every time property values increase they get a raise so this 57 years thing is very misleading. Have you ever seen your tax rate go down?
