The second annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby got off to a wet start.

Organizer Liz Kapsner said the event started at 8:30 a.m., but because of the weather, no participants showed up until after 1 p.m.

She said she was happy the sun decided to shine, and in the end had eight contestants competing for the Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Ugliest Fish prizes in this free Father’s Day event.

The winner of the biggest fish was Geoff Band for catching a perch that weighed 4 o.z. Band won a gift box filled with War Eagle Mill cornbread mix, hush puppy mix, Ensley fish fry mix and a jar of hot cause. The winner of the smallest fish was Rob McCulley, with a perch weighing in at 2 oz. McCulley took home hush puppy mix and Ensley fish fry mix for his efforts. The ugliest fish prize went to Matthew Brewer, who caught a 3 oz. perch to take home a bag of Ensley fish fry mix.

Kapsner said last year’s event brought out warm weather and more participants. To see video from last year’s fishing derby, click here.
