Former Razorback falls just short of third career major title

Stacy Lewis looked to make a run at her first ever U.S. Open title but a fellow American prevented the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world her third major title.

Michelle Wie’s even par final round was good to enough to post a 2-under for the tournament and her first major championship. Lewis finished two strokes back at even-par for the tournament.

Lewis, who led after the opening round, closed the gap to just one stroke at one point on the back nine but the former Razorback made bogey then Wie rolled in an eagle putt on No. 10. Lewis finished with back-to-back birdies and again got within a stroke of Wie after the Hawaiian made double-bogey at No. 16.

But that was when the 24-year old put things to rest. Wie rolled in a birdie putt on No. 17 to push her advantage back to two strokes and iced the tournament.

The LPGA now moves to Northwest Arkansas next week for the Walmart Championship presented by P&G at Pinnacle Hills Country Club in Rogers.
