The advent of texting is leading to a decline in not only leaving a voice mail, but in picking up the phone and calling someone as well. An article from the New York Times cites the following statistics:

  • Voice Mail has dropped eight percent from October 2013 to April of 2014, according to Vonage.
  • Teenage texting is on the rise. A Pew report shows teen texting is up to 60 texts a day in 2011, compared to 50 in 2009. Only 14% of teens actually call a friend every day.

Etiquette experts cite many have an awkwardness and anxiety in leaving voice mails. Some are now coaching clients on how to leave a message for someone other than through texting.
